With a little planning and a lot of determination, we can all save a ton of money on many goods and services. Commit yourself to living well on much less and learn to stretch every hard-earned dollar to the max. When you cut back on smaller areas of your life, you can splurge on other items you really want (that dream vacation, a new car). Below are ten ways to reduce your expenses and start improving your life immediately.
1. Never shop for groceries when hungry. This is the golden rule-of-thumb when it comes to grocery shopping. Being hungry will override your decision-making every time. Stick to a list you’ve prepared ahead of time.
2. Use coupons carefully. Only use them for items you would normally purchase if you didn’t have a coupon and only if it truly saves you money. Check other brands, even generic, that may be cheaper.
3. Shop less-frequently. It will force you to make the food you already have last longer and be more creative with meal preparation.
4. Leave the kids at home when you shop. You will stick to your list much easily without tlittle hands picking up items you have no intention of buying.
5. Buy in bulk. This will cut down dramatically on trips to the store and can save up to 50% of the unit cost. Reorganize your kitchen cabinets and pantry to make room.
6. Buy generic. Store-brand items are just as tasty as brand name, but cost much less.
7. Plant a garden. You don’t need a huge expanse of space to grow your own veggies. Plant tomatoes, herbs, squash and cucumbers in planters on your back porch.
8. Wash with cold water. Paired with a good detergent, cold water will clean just as well as warm or hot, and will save you a ton on your next electric bill.
9. Sign up for automatic bill pay. You’ll save money on stamps, late fees and checks.
10. Install flow-controlled faucets and showerheads. You’ll never notice a difference and will save lots of money on your next water bill.
