I don’t know about you, but sometimes the very idea of planning a summer vacation is so stress inducing, it hardly seems worth it. But we all need some time away so that we don’t get burned out by our day-to-day lives. So why not start by using some of our summer travel shortcuts to save you time, money and hassle, so that you can get a much-deserved dream vacation.
Summer travel time savers
Have a plan: This sounds cliched, but would you rather read a cliche here, or spend your precious minutes reading a map, trying to find that art exhibit that you thought would be at the museum around the corner. Prepare for a vacation like you would prepare for a board meeting – create an agenda, prioritize what you want to do and make notes to help you get there.
Travel light: If you’re a frequent traveler, you’re nodding your head emphatically right now, I know it! If you’re packing your summer vacation into a long weekend, strongly consider making the most of your carry-on bag (everyone should own a really dependable one), instead of checking your luggage. Despite your reservations, this is doable if you plan your outfits carefully
Summer travel cost savers
Military discounts: Where there’s a will, there’s a military discount. If you’re like me, asking may make you feel awkward, but I encourage you to if you’re trying to pinch pennies. Otherwise there are other great resources to find military travel discounts. Work with a travel agent to find discounts for cruises. At least one major theme park per year offers an incentive for military families. This year, it’s Disney’s Armed Forces Salute, offering a free 5-day park pass to active and retired service members. Book through Disney and also receive up to 40 percent off Disney resorts.
Pack your bags: Don’t worry if you think you’ve packed too much en route to your destination, or bought too much when arriving home. Many airlines will waive the extra checked-bag fees for active duty military, the perfect solution if your traveling with your husband!
Stress-free summer travel
Use your USO: Forget laying low during your next layover in the Chili’s Too or in the rigid seats at your gate. Many airports across the country have a USO that welcomes traveling active duty and retired service members and their spouses (with a military ID). These centers have comfortable chairs, TV, movies, books, computers with Internet access and free food. Thanks to the tireless USO volunteers, these centers don’t even feel like you’re in an airport at all. Don’t take advantage, be sure to leave a small donation before you leave, if you can, so they can continue to provide the service for our brave service members.
Staycation: If your budget or your schedule won’t allow for a summer vacation this year, join millions of Americans who are embarking on a “staycation.” Simply, treat home like a vacation. Do a little research to find compelling day trips, or call your local Visitors and Convention Bureau to get tips and discounts for local tourist destinations. Be advised that the key to a “staycation” is really taking a vacation from work. So, turn off your Blackberry, Palm or iPhone and stay off of your computer. Enjoy this time off with your family because that’s what matters most.
